Assistant Mid-Market Underwriter

About the role

We are seeking an Assistant Mid-Market Underwriter to join a fast‑growing insurer in Manchester. Working from the heart of Spinningfields, you will support the underwriting of mid‑market commercial risks and develop your technical expertise within a high‑performing team.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in underwriting new mid‑market business with premiums up to £50,000 GWP.
• Assess and select risks across Property, Liability and Commercial Motor classes, with senior support as needed.
• Prepare and negotiate quotations for new business opportunities.
• Build strong relationships with partner brokers, delivering responsive service.
• Support the negotiation of competitive and sustainable underwriting solutions.
• Manage a high volume of submissions while gaining confidence in decision‑making.
• Collaborate with colleagues to drive market growth.
• Continue technical development through structured training and mentoring.

Required profile

• Previous experience in commercial insurance, preferably as an Assistant Underwriter or similar support role.
• Strong numerical, analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Proactive approach with the ability to prioritise competing workloads.
• Genuine interest in commercial insurance and risk management.
• Confidence to make informed underwriting decisions with appropriate support.
