Assistant Solicitor for Public Inquiry

About the role
The Emma Caldwell Inquiry is seeking Assistant Solicitors to join its legal team. This is a unique chance to contribute to a high‑profile public inquiry examining the investigation into Emma Caldwell’s murder and to help shape the evidence‑gathering process.
Key responsibilities
- Identify, recover and engage with external stakeholders to obtain evidence.
- Review, analyse and summarise evidence against the Inquiry’s Terms of Reference.
- Produce thematic reports and suggest further lines of inquiry.
- Handle redaction and disclosure of evidence in line with Inquiry policies.
- Instruct, liaise and collaborate regularly with Counsel.
- Provide legal advice to the Chair when required.
- Liaise with solicitors representing core participants and facilitate witness statements.
- Assist in identifying and instructing expert witnesses.
- Draft and ensure compliance with the Inquiry’s procedural documents.
- Maintain GDPR compliance.
- Offer practical and legal support during hearing sessions and produce post‑hearing summaries.
Required profile
- Qualified solicitor or advocate in Scotland (applications from other jurisdictions considered).
- Excellent attention to detail for high‑volume documentation.
- Strong interpersonal skills for collaboration with internal and external parties.
- Flexibility and adaptability to handle a variety of tasks in a small team.
