Assistant Underwriter – Commercial Insurance

About the role

The Assistant Underwriter will support brokers in the commercial insurance market, handling new and existing business for SME property and casualty packages. Working within defined underwriting authority, you will help determine policy terms, calculate premiums and ensure compliance with the company’s underwriting controls.

Key responsibilities

• Provide timely, professional support to brokers for new and existing business enquiries.
• Assess risks, identify hazards and determine appropriate coverage and pricing for SME policies.
• Calculate premiums in line with authority levels and contribute to income and profit targets.
• Monitor loss ratios and adhere to underwriting guidelines to control risk.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers and internal partners.
• Assist in the development and execution of sales campaigns to acquire profitable business.
• Maintain market awareness and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years’ experience underwriting SME property and casualty package policies.
• Strong understanding of commercial insurance principles and risk assessment.
• Ability to work to service level agreements and meet broker expectations.
• Excellent communication and relationship‑building skills.
