Associate Principal Structural Engineer

About the role

BWB Consulting is recruiting an Associate Principal Engineer for its Structures team in Leeds. The role combines technical leadership with mentoring engineers and shaping sustainable designs, working with developers, contractors and major private sector organisations from early design concepts through to construction.

Key responsibilities

• Develop structural concepts that respond to the client's brief, exploring options and resolving technical challenges early
• Coordinate engineers and technicians, manage workloads and give clear technical direction
• Manage project resources and design delivery to meet quality, programme and financial objectives
• Lead multidisciplinary projects at technical and commercial level with external design teams
• Explain design decisions clearly and build lasting client relationships
• Share expertise, review work and support engineers and technicians
• Use analysis and modelling tools to develop efficient, buildable and sustainable solutions

Required profile

• Substantial experience in a UK design consultancy, typically 10+ years after graduation or qualification
• Varying project portfolio, including medium- to high-rise residential, education, logistics and commercial developments
• Strong technical judgement in early-stage concept design and experience supporting projects to construction
• Experience leading project teams and managing competing workloads
• Commercial awareness and ability to balance design quality with budget, resources and deadlines
• Understanding of other engineering disciplines and confidence coordinating multidisciplinary design
• Chartered Engineer status is desirable, preferably through IStructE

Required skills

• Strong structural engineering knowledge
• Strong IT skills and familiarity with structural analysis and design tools
• Clear communication, organisation and collaborative problem-solving
