Audit Manager – Chester

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Audit Manager to join a well‑established accountancy practice in Chester. You will manage a varied portfolio of audit clients, oversee engagements from planning to completion, and develop junior team members while maintaining high technical standards.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of audit clients across multiple sectors, including owner‑managed businesses and SMEs.
• Plan, lead and review audit engagements, ensuring delivery within agreed deadlines and budgets.
• Serve as the main point of contact for audit clients, building strong relationships.
• Review audit files for compliance with auditing standards and internal procedures.
• Identify audit and accounting issues and propose practical, commercial solutions.
• Supervise, mentor and train audit seniors and junior staff, including performance reviews.
• Liaise with partners on client matters, workflow, and resourcing requirements.
• Assist with proposals, fee negotiations and business development where appropriate.
• Stay up‑to‑date with changes in auditing and accounting standards and apply them in practice.

Required profile

• ACA or ACCA qualified (or equivalent).
• Previous experience in an audit role within an accountancy practice.
• Proven experience managing audit assignments and leading teams.
• Strong technical knowledge of UK auditing and accounting standards.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and client priorities.
• Desirable: experience with SME and owner‑managed businesses, staff development, audit software and cloud‑based accounting systems.
