Autism Specialist Teaching Assistant (Primary School)

About the role

A primary school in Preston is seeking an experienced and approachable Autism specialist Teaching Assistant to start as soon as possible. The role focuses on supporting young pupils on the autism spectrum within a Reception class, using tailored strategies to help them thrive.

Key responsibilities

• Provide targeted support to young pupils on the autism spectrum in a Reception class.
• Implement and follow Individual Education Plans (IEPs) to meet each pupil’s learning needs.
• Maintain pupil focus on tasks and monitor for triggers that may lead to behavioural reactions.
• Apply a range of de‑escalation techniques to manage any incidents calmly and safely.

Required profile

• Experienced SEN Teaching Assistant with a proven track record working with autistic children.
• Strong understanding of the autism spectrum and the ability to tailor support accordingly.
• Passion for supporting SEN pupils, resilience and tenacity to handle challenging situations.

Required skills

• Knowledge of autism spectrum characteristics and appropriate interventions.
• Experience creating and using Individual Education Plans (IEPs).
• Proficiency in de‑escalation and behaviour management techniques.
