Backend Software Engineer – AI Voice Platform

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Backend Software Engineer to join an award‑winning UK healthcare technology company building an AI‑powered voice platform for medical practices. The role is hybrid, based in Borehamwood, and focuses on developing the core infrastructure that powers real‑time conversational AI and telephony services.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement scalable backend services for real‑time voice AI workflows.
• Develop APIs and event‑driven architectures handling telephony, streaming and AI responses.
• Integrate the platform with third‑party healthcare systems and external services.
• Optimise performance, reliability and latency of high‑volume concurrent interactions.
• Contribute to architectural decisions, infrastructure design and engineering best practices.

Required profile

• 5+ years of professional experience building backend systems with Node.js.
• Proven ability to design scalable APIs and distributed systems.
• Experience with real‑time or event‑driven architectures such as WebSockets, message queues or streaming.
• Strong knowledge of cloud platforms, preferably AWS.
• Solid understanding of SQL and/or NoSQL databases.
• Ability to integrate external APIs and third‑party services.
