Basic Skills Development Manager

About the role

The Basic Skills Development Manager works within the Army Training Centre Pirbright, supporting Basic Training trainees by delivering English and Maths programmes and addressing Adult Learning Needs. Reporting to the Commanding Officer, the role combines assessment, curriculum delivery, and quality assurance in a fast‑paced military environment.

Key responsibilities

• Assess and diagnose individual trainees' English and Maths requirements.
• Design and deliver English and Maths programmes that meet national accreditation standards and Army specifications, including the creation of Individual Learning Plans.
• Organise, manage, and evaluate the provision of English and Maths teaching resources across the centre.
• Liaise with external authorities and Functional Skills specialists to maintain a coherent network of provision and stay updated on adult learning developments.
• Coordinate and quality‑assure internal and external English and Maths providers and agencies.
• Provide specific learning differences advice in line with policy.
• Support temporary duties at ATR Winchester as required during the drawdown phase.

Required profile

• Experience assessing and delivering adult English and Maths education.
• Knowledge of national accreditation standards for functional skills.
• Ability to produce Individual Learning Plans and manage learning resources.
• Strong liaison and coordination skills with external educational bodies.
• Capability to work under the direction of senior military leadership in a dynamic environment.
