Biological Safety Advisor – 14‑month Maternity Cover

About the role
The Francis Crick Institute is seeking a Biological Safety Advisor on a 14‑month maternity cover. You will join a high‑performing Health and Safety team that supports world‑leading biomedical research, providing expert advice on biological safety across the institute.
Key responsibilities
- Provide practical biological safety support for work involving biological agents, SAPO (animal viruses), COSHH (human agents) and genetically modified organisms.
- Review, develop and advise on biological risk assessments and safe systems of work.
- Liaise with regulators on notifications and ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulations.
- Act as the first point of contact for biological safety and GMO‑related queries from researchers and technical staff.
- Support the introduction of new biological agent and GMO projects, ensuring appropriate controls are in place.
Required profile
- Strong working knowledge of biological safety legislation and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience advising researchers and technical staff on safe laboratory practices.
- Ability to communicate complex safety information clearly and effectively.
- Attention to detail and a proactive approach to risk management.
Required skills
- Knowledge of SAPO (animal viruses) regulations.
- Familiarity with COSHH (human biological agents) requirements.
- Understanding of the Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations.
