Biomedical Scientist – Histopathology Lab (Oxford)

About the role
This full‑time, permanent position is based in a digitally‑driven histopathology laboratory in Kidlington, Oxford. You will work on an 8.5‑hour shift schedule, including occasional weekend rota, supporting the laboratory’s diagnostic services and AI research projects.
Key responsibilities
- Collect, label, store and track biological samples, performing accessioning, grossing, processing, embedding, microtomy and staining.
- Implement quality control measures, troubleshoot technical issues and ensure compliance with UKAS standards and internal/external audits.
- Assist in method development, validation and research activities, including preparation of samples for AI projects.
- Maintain accurate documentation, generate reports for clinicians and uphold patient data confidentiality.
- Supervise, train and provide feedback to junior staff while rotating across all histopathology sections.
Required profile
- Degree in Biomedical Science, biology, chemistry or related field.
- Current HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist (mandatory).
- Minimum 18 months experience in a UKAS‑accredited histopathology laboratory.
- Completed IBMS Registration Portfolio or equivalent experience.
Required skills
- Specimen reception, dissection assistance, processing, embedding and microtomy.
- Staining techniques, special stains and immunohistochemistry.
- Operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
- Data analysis using statistical software and data‑visualisation tools.
- Use of laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for documentation and reporting.
