Building Safety Manager

About the role

The Building Safety Manager will join the Building Safety Team to support the Private Sector Building Safety Programme in Southwark. Working closely with internal enforcement officers and external partners, the role focuses on identifying and mitigating fire safety risks associated with unsafe cladding and other external wall system defects.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct desktop reviews of privately owned high‑ and medium‑rise residential buildings within the borough.
• Develop and implement a risk‑based inspection programme, collecting data on external wall systems (EWS) and building proprietor contacts.
• Analyse EWS data, FRAEW reports and related documents, categorising buildings by risk and referring unsafe cladding cases to the enforcement team.
• Engage with building owners to gather information on cladding materials, interim fire safety measures, remediation funding and timelines.
• Review Building Safety Fund and Cladding Safety Scheme data to identify missing buildings.
• Maintain relationships with the local Fire and Rescue Service, MHCLG and other stakeholders to share data on unsafe cladding.
• Respond to enquiries from proprietors, councillors and other parties in a professional manner.
• Support investigations, inspections and enforcement actions in collaboration with the internal enforcement team.
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, KPI reporting and team processes.

Required profile

• Experience in building safety, fire safety or related construction sectors.
• Knowledge of external wall systems, combustible cladding and fire risk assessment methodologies.
• Ability to analyse technical reports and categorise risk levels.
• Strong stakeholder engagement skills with owners, regulators and fire services.
• Proactive approach to data collection, review and reporting.
