Bureau Payroll Officer / Client Bookkeeper

About the role

This position offers a varied mix of bureau payroll and client bookkeeping responsibilities within a growing accountancy practice. You will work with a diverse portfolio of clients, delivering professional payroll services while maintaining strong client relationships.

Key responsibilities

• Manage end‑to‑end payroll for multiple clients, including year‑end processes, RTI submissions and auto‑enrolment.
• Prepare bookkeeping records and produce management accounts.
• Complete and submit VAT returns.
• Liaise with HMRC to resolve payroll and taxation queries.
• Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, providing ongoing support and advice.
• Assist the wider team with administrative duties and ad‑hoc client work.

Required profile

• Proven experience in payroll and bookkeeping within an accountancy practice or bureau environment.
• Experience managing multiple client accounts.
• AAT qualification is advantageous, though strong practical experience is also considered.

Required skills

• Payroll processing (including RTI and auto‑enrolment).
• Bookkeeping and preparation of management accounts.
• VAT return preparation.
