Business Development Manager - Freight Forwarding

About the role

Our client, an independent freight forwarder with over 40 years of market presence, is seeking a proactive Business Development Manager. The role is sales‑focused, responsible for generating new profitable customers while a dedicated operations team handles day‑to‑day account management.

Key responsibilities

• Identify and develop new business opportunities across the freight forwarding market.
• Generate leads, build a sustainable sales pipeline and win customers through a consultative, solutions‑led approach.
• Manage the full sales cycle from initial contact to commercial negotiation and contract closure.
• Collaborate with the operations team to ensure smooth handover of new accounts.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of market conditions, customer needs and competitor activity.

Required profile

• Proven track record of winning new business within freight forwarding.
• Strong commercial awareness and deep knowledge of the freight forwarding industry.
• Demonstrated ability to generate leads and build a pipeline independently.
• Existing network of customer relationships or opportunities is highly desirable.
• Excellent communication, negotiation and relationship‑building skills.
• Solutions‑focused sales approach rather than price‑only competition.
• Self‑motivated and able to work effectively from home.
• Experience in deep‑sea container freight, imports, project freight or related services is advantageous.

What we offer

• Basic salary of £45,000‑£55,000 per year, dependent on experience.
• 5‑7% commission on gross profit.
