Business Rates Officer

About the role

The Business Rates Officer will manage the end‑to‑end processing of Business Rates and BID Levy matters for the council. This includes billing, recovery, enforcement and providing professional advice to customers and partners.

Key responsibilities

• Process Business Rates and BID Levy from initial billing through to recovery and enforcement.
• Determine the correct liable party and issue required notices promptly.
• Verify eligibility for reliefs and exemptions and advise customers accordingly.
• Provide high‑quality advice, guidance and support to internal and external stakeholders.
• Assist in reviewing reliefs and exemptions to maximise council revenue and reduce fraud.
• Gather evidence for Liability Order Hearings.
• Calculate refunds for over‑payments and prepare related documentation.
• Identify cases suitable for write‑offs and produce related reports.
• Handle complex business rates issues while complying with council policies.

Required profile

• Understanding of Health & Safety at Work, Data Protection and other statutory requirements.
• Commitment to the council’s Equal Opportunities policies.
• Ability to follow organisational guidelines and procedures.
