Category Manager

About the role

We are partnering with a leading UK infrastructure business to recruit a Category Manager for their Commercial & Procurement function. Based in Reading (hybrid), you will own a portfolio worth up to £20m and shape category strategy across complex supply markets.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and own short‑, medium‑ and long‑term category strategies to maximise value and manage risk.
• Lead the full sourcing lifecycle, from market analysis and tender management to negotiation, contract award and ongoing supplier management.
• Build strong stakeholder relationships, act as a trusted commercial advisor and influence decisions at all levels.
• Manage key supplier relationships using a structured Supplier Management Framework, including governance reviews and performance monitoring.
• Identify and deliver commercial initiatives, process improvements and risk mitigation actions.
• Conduct supplier due‑diligence and risk reviews, supporting the enterprise risk model.
• Mentor and peer‑review colleagues to foster best‑practice across the team.

Required profile

• Experience in a Category Manager, procurement or commercial role with a solid understanding of category management principles.
• Familiarity with complex supply‑chain environments and confidence engaging with suppliers and internal stakeholders.
• Strong commercial instincts, ability to manage risk, interpret data and turn market insight into actionable plans.
• Excellent influencing and communication abilities.
