About the role
The Chaplain provides faith‑based and pastoral support to prisoners, staff and their families within HHM Prison Birmingham. Working as part of a multi‑faith chaplaincy team, the role involves delivering worship, meditation and spiritual guidance for Roman Catholic, other faith and non‑faith individuals.
Key responsibilities
- Offer pastoral care, spiritual advice and crisis support to inmates and staff of all faiths and none.
- Plan, lead and facilitate Catholic worship services, prayer meetings and faith‑specific programmes.
- Collaborate with other chaplains, volunteers and external faith groups to maintain worship facilities and develop religious resources.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of faith‑based and non‑faith‑based courses, including Faith Awareness Training for staff.
- Support the resettlement of offenders by liaising with the wider Catholic community.
- Distribute appropriate religious literature, artefacts and materials.
- Mentor and support chaplaincy volunteers and assist the Official Prison Visitor scheme.
Required profile
- Ordained Roman Catholic priest, deacon, religious brother, sister or qualified lay person.
- Understanding of multiple faith traditions and ability to work in a multi‑faith environment.
- Commitment to personal spiritual development and reflective practice.
- Ability to handle confidential and sensitive situations with discretion.
