Chief Software Architect

About the role

We are looking for a Chief Software Architect to lead the design and delivery of cutting‑edge cryptographic and key‑management solutions for defence and cyber systems. Based in Maidenhead, you will shape the software engineering strategy across multiple high‑security projects and mentor a team of 20‑30 engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Define and own software architectures for advanced defence systems, ensuring scalability, security and compliance.
• Guide project teams in selecting optimal tools, frameworks and development processes.
• Collaborate with hardware, systems and firmware groups to produce integrated solutions.
• Develop detailed software requirements, UML and SysML models, and review designs for quality and modularity.
• Champion DevSecOps practices, continuous integration, automated testing and secure coding standards.
• Support bid preparation, proposal writing and influence organisational software standards.

Required profile

• Proven experience delivering complex embedded or application software in defence or high‑assurance environments.
• Strong leadership skills with a track record of mentoring engineering teams.
• Ability to work with stakeholders to translate security needs into technical solutions.
• Experience managing multiple projects and delivering on schedule.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in C/C++ and Rust.
• Embedded development expertise, including RTOS environments.
• Linux development and system integration.
• UML and SysML modelling.
• DevSecOps, CI/CD pipelines and automated testing frameworks.
• Version control, change control and bug‑tracking tools.
• Familiarity with defence standards such as MISRA and secure coding guidelines.
