Childcare Solicitor (Public Law)

About the role

The Legists, a well‑established law firm in Shropshire, is expanding its Family Law team and seeks a dedicated Childcare Solicitor to manage public‑law children matters. This full‑time, hybrid position offers the chance to work on care proceedings while enjoying flexible working and a supportive environment.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a diverse caseload of public‑law childcare matters from instruction to final hearing.
• Represent parents, children and extended family members in care proceedings.
• Advise clients throughout Public Law Outline (PLO) pre‑proceedings processes.
• Handle applications for Care Orders, Supervision Orders, Emergency Protection Orders and related matters.
• Conduct advocacy in Family Court where appropriate.
• Maintain compliance with Legal Aid Agency requirements, Lexcel standards and firm procedures.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, local authorities and other stakeholders.

Required profile

• Qualified Solicitor or CILEX Fellow with a current practising certificate in England & Wales.
• Minimum 2 years post‑qualification experience handling public‑law childcare cases (candidates with varying experience will be considered).
• Strong knowledge of care proceedings and public‑law children work.
• Excellent advocacy skills and confidence appearing before the Family Court.
• Compassionate, professional approach to vulnerable clients.
• Organisational ability to manage a busy caseload independently.
• Experience working within Legal Aid frameworks and billing systems.
• Law Society Children Panel Accreditation is advantageous; support and funding are available for those pursuing it.
