Church Buildings Officer

About the role

We are looking for a proactive Church Buildings Officer to support parishes across the Diocese of Sussex in caring for and adapting their historic church buildings. The role combines heritage conservation, sustainability and mission‑focused advice, offering flexible hours and hybrid working from Hove.

Key responsibilities

• Manage List B permissions on behalf of Archdeacons.
• Advise parishes on the care, repair and improvement of church buildings, contents and churchyards.
• Support the use of the Online Faculty System and guide permissions processes.
• Assist in progressing faculty applications and building projects.
• Prepare agendas, committee papers and draft minutes for Diocesan Advisory Committee (DAC) meetings.
• Conduct site visits, produce reports and deliver training for clergy, churchwardens and volunteers.
• Promote sustainable and energy‑efficient solutions for church properties.

Required profile

• Relevant degree or equivalent experience in historic buildings, heritage conservation or the built environment.
• Proven ability to interpret and apply legislation related to historic structures.
• Experience in advisory roles, working with volunteers and managing casework or applications with high accuracy.
• Strong organisational skills for meeting preparation, record‑keeping and reporting.
• Excellent written communication and interpersonal abilities.

Required skills

• Knowledge of heritage legislation and historic building management.
• Proficiency with IT systems, including the Online Faculty System.
