Civil Engineering Apprentice

About the role

This 42‑month Civil Engineering Apprenticeship with Northumberland County Council offers hands‑on experience in highway design, asset management and infrastructure maintenance. Training is delivered by New College Durham and will begin in September 2026 after a mandatory interview week in early August.

Key responsibilities

• Design and manage highway assets and structures.
• Assist the maintenance team with highway inspections and surveys.
• Prepare CAD drawings and detailed designs for maintenance, strengthening and new‑build projects.
• Carry out site measurements, surveys and inspections.
• Produce technical reports and respond to client information requests.
• Provide day‑to‑day support to colleagues across different disciplines.

Required profile

• Enthusiastic and eager to learn through hands‑on experience.
• Ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
• GCSE Maths and English (grade 4/C or above) or equivalent.
• Familiarity with standard IT tools such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
• Willingness to work across Northumberland locations, including Hexham.
