Class 2 Winter Maintenance Gritter Driver – Standby Pay

About the role

We are recruiting a Class 2 Winter Maintenance Gritter Driver for a client operating out of Drayton and Deddington in Oxfordshire. The role is standby‑based throughout the winter months, offering a guaranteed weekly payment and additional call‑out rates when required.

Key responsibilities

• Remain on standby from Friday morning to the following Friday, ready to respond to call‑outs within one hour.
• Operate a Class 2 gritter vehicle to apply grit on roads, weather‑dependent up to 5 hours per shift.
• Attend the daily 11:00 am briefing and follow weather‑action plans.
• Maintain accurate tachograph records and comply with all health‑and‑safety procedures.
• Wear and care for provided PPE, including high‑visibility clothing and hard hat.
• Complete a one‑day theory and one‑day practical training to obtain a Winter Ticket.

Required profile

• Valid Class 2 driving licence.
• Ability to work on a zero‑hours, five‑month contract and remain flexible to short‑notice call‑outs.
• Residence within an hour’s drive of the site (Drayton/Deddington).
• Willingness to work in severe winter weather and adhere to safety standards.
• Availability to refrain from other driving duties between November and March.

Required skills

• Class 2 vehicle operation.
• Tachograph usage and record‑keeping.
• Winter road gritting procedures.

What we offer

• Guaranteed standby payment of £241.37 per week.
• Call‑out pay at £21.25 per hour (minimum 5 hours).
• PAYE‑deducted earnings, paid training and full PPE provision.
• Zero‑hours contract for a five‑month winter period.
