Client Accountant – Accountancy Practice

About the role

This client‑facing position is responsible for managing a portfolio of SME clients and delivering high‑quality accounting, tax and advisory services. You will work closely with the leadership team to meet client deadlines, maintain strong relationships and support junior staff. The role is ideal for an experienced practice accountant who enjoys direct interaction with founders and business owners.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a diverse portfolio of SME clients, providing proactive financial insight and business advice.
• Prepare and review statutory accounts under FRS 102/105 and corporation tax computations (CT600).
• Produce management accounts, variance analysis and cash‑flow forecasts.
• Handle VAT returns, liaise with HMRC, Companies House and other third parties.
• Supervise and mentor junior team members, reviewing their bookkeeping and VAT work.
• Support workflow management, resource planning and team development.
• Implement and optimise cloud accounting tools such as Xero and Dext, identifying automation opportunities.
• Assist with company secretarial filings and compliance matters.

Required profile

• Qualified accountant with solid practice experience, comfortable working directly with business owners.
• Strong client‑service orientation and ability to meet tight deadlines.
• Proven ability to supervise and develop junior staff.
• Excellent communication skills and commercial awareness.

Required skills

• Proficiency with Xero cloud accounting software.
• Experience using Dext for expense processing.
• Knowledge of FRS 102, FRS 105, corporation tax and VAT compliance.
