Clinical Coding Trainer

About the role
The NHS England Approved Clinical Coding Trainer will join the Torbay and South Devon Clinical Coding Team to design and deliver a comprehensive training programme for coding trainees, apprentices and the wider coding workforce. This role supports high‑quality clinical coding across the Trust and helps colleagues deepen their understanding of coding standards and processes.
Key responsibilities
- Develop, plan and deliver training courses, workshops and ad‑hoc sessions for clinical coders and related staff.
- Conduct inductions for new staff and act as a mentor for novice coders.
- Assess learning needs, shape trainee pathways and provide regular coaching and feedback.
- Create and update training materials, ensuring alignment with national coding standards.
- Support the production of case‑study training content and resolve coding inaccuracies.
- Serve as a point of contact for the Clinical Coding Department and contribute to policy development.
Required profile
- Substantial experience working within the NHS coding environment.
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities.
- Ability to assess learning needs and tailor training programmes.
- Commitment to promoting high‑quality clinical coding.
Required skills
- Proficiency with NHS clinical coding standards (e.g., ICD‑10, OPCS‑4).
- Knowledge of national coding guidelines and best practices.
