Commercial Manager (Defence)

About the role

We are seeking a Commercial Manager to lead the full commercial lifecycle for complex UK defence contracts within a leading engineering and defence organisation. Reporting to the Commercial leadership team, you will work closely with senior stakeholders, project teams and customers to drive business growth from bid inception to contract closure.

Key responsibilities

• Lead commercial activities across the entire route to contract, from bid qualification to award.
• Develop pricing strategies, proposals, terms and conditions, and contractual documentation for bids.
• Negotiate contracts and commercial arrangements with customers, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
• Manage contracts throughout their lifecycle, including amendments, deliverables, compliance, document control and closure.
• Identify commercial risks and opportunities, creating mitigation strategies with cross‑functional teams.
• Ensure compliance with legislation, defence industry regulations and export control requirements.
• Act as the primary commercial interface for customers and internal stakeholders, resolving issues and providing guidance.
• Produce regular commercial performance reports and support dispute resolution with legal and business functions.
• Mentor junior commercial staff and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a commercial function within defence or a similarly regulated environment.
• Strong understanding of contract drafting, negotiation and commercial governance.
• Ability to manage multiple contracts simultaneously in a fast‑paced project setting.
• Excellent analytical skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Effective relationship‑building skills with customers and cross‑functional teams.
• Strategic mindset supporting business growth and innovation.
• Leadership or line‑management experience.
• Knowledge of MoD contracting structures (DEFCONs, QDCs) is advantageous.
