Commercial Underwriter – Insurance

About the role

Lawes Consulting Group is partnering with a well‑established insurance business to recruit an experienced Commercial Underwriter for its Colchester office. The role focuses on delivering profitable underwriting outcomes, managing both renewal and new business cases while collaborating closely with brokers and internal teams.

Key responsibilities

• Manage own underwriting cases within defined appetite and authority.
• Handle referral cases for less experienced underwriters and apprentices.
• Maintain accurate records of all underwriting decisions.
• Follow company processes, best practice and quality‑assurance procedures.
• Work towards divisional targets for retention, conversion, rate and loss ratio.
• Build and sustain strong relationships with broking partners nationwide.
• Negotiate terms to support conversion and broker relationships.
• Continuously develop technical knowledge of relevant insurance topics.
• Collaborate with regional offices and other organisational functions.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years underwriting experience in the commercial insurance sector.
• Proven ability to develop and maintain effective trading relationships.
• Experience working across matrix organisations and collaborating with multiple functions.
• Consistent track record of meeting goals in a structured, organised manner.
