Communications and Engagement Manager

About the role

The Communications and Engagement Manager will lead internal and external communications for Forestry England’s Central District. Reporting to the District Marketing & Communications Manager, you will shape the narrative around the nation’s forests, highlighting their climate, nature, social and economic benefits.

Key responsibilities

• Implement the district communications strategy and workplan aligned with district priorities.
• Create proactive, multi‑channel content that builds the brand, engages supporters, and drives membership and volunteer growth.
• Serve as the district’s lead storyteller, translating technical forestry work into compelling stories for a broad audience.
• Manage reactive communications, including incident response, project announcements, visitor behaviour updates, and stakeholder engagement.
• Deliver internal engagement initiatives, such as the weekly staff newsletter and content for the national intranet.

Required profile

• Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to simplify complex topics.
• Experience in developing and executing communications strategies for public‑sector or environmental organisations.
• Ability to work collaboratively across diverse teams, including Sustainable Land Management, Ecology, and Business Support.
• Self‑motivated, detail‑oriented, and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously.

Required skills

• Proficiency in creating content for digital, print and social media channels.
• Experience with editorial planning and newsletter production.
• Knowledge of crisis communication and stakeholder engagement best practices.
