Communications Officer (Hybrid, Part‑time)

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Communications Officer to join the National Galleries of Scotland. The role is hybrid, four‑day week (Monday, Wednesday‑Friday) and will support the promotion of our three Edinburgh galleries – the National, Modern and Portrait – to local, national and international audiences.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and deliver earned‑media campaigns for exhibitions across print, broadcast, online, podcasts and social platforms.
• Identify compelling stories and visual assets, pitch them to global media and build relationships with journalists, content creators and production companies.
• Write and edit press releases, website copy, internal updates and social‑media content.
• Organise press viewings, influencer partnerships, photocalls and other events to generate engaging coverage.
• Manage day‑to‑day press‑office enquiries via email, phone and social channels and provide regular reporting on media activity.
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners such as Edinburgh Art Festival, Scotland+Venice and VisitScotland.

Required profile

• Proven communications experience, preferably within a press office or cultural institution.
• Strong storytelling ability and a track record of securing media coverage.
• Excellent written communication skills and confidence in pitching to diverse media outlets.
• Enthusiasm for making art accessible to a wide audience.
