Communications Officer

About the role

Join a high‑performing Communications & Engagement team at the heart of a busy, forward‑thinking local authority. You will help shape the narrative of one of the UK’s most influential cities, working alongside senior leaders, councillors and colleagues to build trust and encourage community engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Advise senior colleagues on communications strategy and messaging.
• Develop and launch multi‑channel campaigns that reach thousands of residents.
• Create digital content, including social media posts and short videos, from events and briefings.
• Manage media enquiries and support consultations on major projects.
• Respond quickly to fast‑moving issues and sensitive topics.
• Help translate complex policy into clear, accessible communications.
• Participate in a rota covering media enquiries and social media, including occasional evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Required profile

• Proven experience in communications, public relations, journalism or marketing.
• Comfortable thinking strategically as well as writing news stories and producing social media reels.
• Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment with changing priorities.
• Professional qualification in communications, journalism or marketing (e.g., CIPR, PRCA, CIM) is welcome but not essential.
• Strong collaborative skills for working with senior leaders, councillors and cross‑departmental teams.
