Community Alarm Officer

About the role

The Community Alarm Officer provides front‑line emergency response and support to elderly and vulnerable residents across the London Borough of Harrow. Working from the Harrow Civic Hub and travelling throughout the borough, you will act as the primary contact when resident wardens are unavailable, ensuring safety and well‑being out of hours.

Key responsibilities

• Respond promptly to emergency calls, gain access to premises, summon help, and provide physical assistance where needed.
• Carry out daily rounds at sheltered housing schemes, delivering the same level of support as resident wardens.
• Maintain accurate records of all actions taken during emergency and routine calls.
• Report defects or urgent repairs to the appropriate maintenance teams.
• Perform routine fire alarm testing, replace smoke‑alarm batteries, program key fobs and support CCTV systems.
• Provide secure access for contractors and ensure buildings are safe after incidents.
• Relay welfare information to Care Management teams and liaise with resident wardens and scheme staff.
• Assist the Helpline Control Station with alarm installations and call‑handling backup as required.

Required profile

• Experience caring for or supporting vulnerable people, either paid or voluntary.
• Ability to remain calm and effective during emergencies.
• Excellent communication skills with a compassionate approach.
• Valid UK driving licence, access to a car and appropriate business insurance.
• Enhanced DBS clearance.

• Competitive rate of £16.71 per hour (PAYE).
• 36‑hour weekly rota, including evenings, weekends and bank holidays.
• Temporary three‑month contract with the possibility of extension.
