Community Ranger – West Dean

About the role

The Community Ranger will act as the primary liaison between Forestry England and local communities in West Dean, ensuring forest sites are safe, welcoming and well‑maintained. You will engage with visitors, volunteers and partners to enhance the visitor experience and promote sustainable forest use.

Key responsibilities

• Be the visible and welcoming face of Forestry England for local communities.
• Carry out regular inspections of car parks, cycle routes, play areas and manage litter to keep sites safe and enjoyable.
• Support operational programmes and deliver projects in line with district plans and sustainable forestry practices.
• Coordinate emergency procedures, provide first‑aid assistance and complete accident/incident reports.
• Promote responsible visitor behaviour and professionally resolve conflicts.
• Collaborate with colleagues to manage public access during land‑management operations.
• Build and maintain relationships with external partners, tenants and concession operators.
• Work with local agencies such as the National Park Authority Ranger team to reduce visitor impact and arson risks.
• Develop community involvement and recreation opportunities that connect visitors with the forest.
• Plan, lead and safely manage volunteer groups and programmes.

Required profile

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with diverse community members.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in outdoor environments.
• Good organisational skills for planning events and managing volunteers.
• Awareness of health and safety procedures and ability to deliver first aid.
• Commitment to sustainable forestry and environmental stewardship.
