Conflict Operations Editor (International Desk)

About the role

The International Desk at The New York Times is seeking a Conflict Operations Editor to lead high‑risk newsgathering efforts. This senior newsroom position works closely with security advisers, senior editors and leadership to ensure the safety of journalists while delivering world‑class reporting from conflict zones.

Key responsibilities

• Guide and coordinate assignments in security‑sensitive locations, balancing editorial importance with staff safety.
• Provide daily briefings on situations, staffing and risk assessments for newsroom leadership.
• Investigate security incidents, identify vulnerabilities and implement corrective measures.
• Rapidly establish or scale conflict bureaus, securing local infrastructure and vetting partners.
• Lead disaster‑recovery, evacuation planning and crisis‑management in partnership with business continuity teams.
• Collaborate with security operations to equip teams with appropriate gear, training and protocols.

Required profile

• Veteran journalist with extensive experience covering conflict or security‑sensitive environments.
• Proven judgment and leadership in high‑pressure, dangerous assignments.
• Ability to make rapid, risk‑based decisions and communicate them clearly.
• Willingness to travel internationally and work on‑site in London four days a week.
