Construction Buyer – Chesterfield

About the role

We are seeking a Construction Buyer to lead a newly created buying function for a specialist engineering contractor based in Chesterfield. The role will manage two purchasing assistants and support the Geotechnical and Structures departments, offering a clear pathway to a management position.

Key responsibilities

• Manage the end‑to‑end purchasing process for materials, plant hire and services across both businesses.
• Negotiate pricing, agreements and bulk terms with merchants and global suppliers.
• Raise, process and track purchase orders while maintaining accurate records.
• Develop and supervise two purchasing/administrative assistants based in London and Chesterfield.
• Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers and subcontractors, monitoring performance and identifying consolidation opportunities.
• Collaborate with internal stores, warehouse and workshop managers to optimise stock control and tracking.
• Drive data consolidation and process improvements across spreadsheets and systems.
• Ensure cost‑effective delivery decisions, balancing speed, site continuity and standard premiums.
• Support continuous improvement of procurement processes and systems.

Required profile

• Proven experience in a purchasing or buying role within construction, civil engineering, builders' merchants or plant hire.
• Strong commercial acumen with a track record of effective supplier negotiation.
• Ability to work autonomously in a fast‑paced environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency with spreadsheets and general IT tools.
