Construction Underwriter – Existing Business

About the role

IPS Group is partnering with a leading insurer to recruit an experienced Construction Underwriter for their existing business portfolio. Based in Birmingham (with options for Manchester or Leeds), you will underwrite a diverse range of construction risks, from electrical and HVAC contractors to building services and finishing trades.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a portfolio of renewals, MTAs and referrals across construction lines of business.
• Provide high‑level service to brokers via phone, email and e‑trading platforms.
• Underwrite within authority limits, ensuring profitability and compliance with underwriting guidelines.
• Build and nurture strong broker relationships, identifying upsell and cross‑sell opportunities.
• Participate in underwriting meetings, sharing market insights and performance trends.
• Collaborate with technical teams and wider business functions on policy decisions.
• Support ad‑hoc projects and team initiatives as required.

Required profile

• Solid background in construction underwriting, preferably within a commercial insurance environment.
• Proven experience managing renewals and broker relationships.
• Ability to make commercial decisions and work towards senior underwriting progression.
• Strong communication skills and a customer‑focused mindset.
