Consultant – Acute & General Medicine

About the role

The University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Consultant in Acute and General Medicine to join its Acute Medical Team. This permanent position starts in October 2026 and will support the delivery of high‑quality acute care across the General Hospital.

Key responsibilities

• Provide a hands‑on consultant service on the Acute Medical Unit from 8 am to 9 pm.
• Work with the health economy to prevent unnecessary admissions, shorten length of stay and optimise discharge pathways.
• Collaborate closely with the Emergency Department to improve patient flow and implement service changes.
• Conduct daily reviews of emergency admissions and lead an evening post‑take ward round.
• Contribute to teaching, training and research activities within the Trust.

Required profile

• Full GMC registration and a recognised medical qualification.
• Significant experience in acute and general medicine at consultant level.
• Demonstrated ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and with the Emergency Department.
• Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and education.
