Consultant Addictions Psychiatrist (Part‑time, Temporary)

About the role

This part‑time, temporary consultancy offers a senior psychiatrist the opportunity to lead addiction services in Reading, Berkshire. You will provide specialist assessment, treatment and clinical leadership for patients with substance misuse and co‑occurring mental health conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct specialist psychiatric assessments and deliver evidence‑based treatment for substance misuse disorders.
• Develop and oversee personalised care plans in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team.
• Lead complex cases, including co‑occurring mental health conditions and prescribing programmes such as opiate substitution therapy and alcohol detoxification.
• Provide clinical supervision and guidance to prescribing staff and other clinicians.
• Promote evidence‑based practice, contribute to service development, quality improvement and clinical governance.
• Liaise with GPs, mental health services, social care, prisons and partner agencies to ensure integrated care pathways.
• Maintain accurate clinical records and ensure compliance with professional and regulatory standards.

Required profile

• Medical degree with full GMC registration and a licence to practise.
• Consultant Psychiatrist on the GMC Specialist Register, endorsed in Substance Misuse.
• Proven experience leading multidisciplinary teams in addiction psychiatry.
• Strong knowledge of addiction treatments, including opiate substitution and detoxification programmes.
• Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.
