Consultant Physician

About the role

NHS Highland is preparing a new hospital in Fort William and seeks two Consultant Physicians to help shape its future. The role involves delivering high‑quality general medical care within a 21‑bed Combined Assessment Unit, a high‑dependency unit, and a mixed/rehabilitation ward, while supporting research, teaching and specialist collaboration across Scotland.

Key responsibilities

• Provide acute and mixed‑case medical assessment and treatment for in‑patients.
• Lead and support the high‑dependency unit, including short‑term critical care.
• Collaborate with specialist nurses, junior doctors and medical students in teaching and mentorship.
• Develop and maintain links with the Scottish Rural Health Partnership and university research programmes.
• Contribute to service development, quality improvement and the planning of the new hospital facilities.

Required profile

• Broad experience in general medicine, with a particular interest in geriatric medicine encouraged.
• Excellent communication, problem‑solving and teamwork skills.
• Flexibility to work within an integrated, multidisciplinary team.
• Willingness to engage in research, teaching and service development activities.

Required skills

• GMC Specialist Register with a Licence to Practise (or within six months of obtaining CCT in General Medicine).
• Experience in acute medicine and high‑dependency/critical care environments.
• Proficiency in using on‑site laboratory services, ultrasound and CT imaging.
• Knowledge of geriatric medicine principles.
