About the role
The Contact Officer role is the frontline of Dorset Police’s Contact Management service, based at Bournemouth Police Station. You will handle both non‑emergency (101) and emergency (999) calls, ensuring the public receive the right assistance quickly and empathetically.
Key responsibilities
- Receive and triage incoming 101 and 999 calls, assessing risk and determining appropriate response.
- Provide accurate information and support to callers, aiming to resolve enquiries at the first point of contact.
- Complete a 12‑week classroom‑based training programme before undertaking full shift duties.
- Work a rotating shift pattern, including potential weekend duties, and travel to the Winfrith site for additional training.
- Maintain detailed records of calls and actions taken in line with police procedures.
Required profile
- Must be at least 18 years old by the start date.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to stay calm under pressure.
- Strong empathy and customer‑focused attitude.
- Ability to work flexible shift patterns, including nights and weekends.

What we offer
- Permanent full‑time position (37 hours per week).
- Scale D salary ranging from £31,012 to £34,039 per annum, inclusive of a 14 % shift allowance.
- Potential weekend working allowance of up to £2,500 after training.
