Costs Budgeter – Legacy & Military Claims

About the role

Keoghs LLP is looking for an experienced Costs Budgeter to join its specialist Legacy & Military team. You will manage a caseload of complex, high‑value legacy and military claims, drafting and negotiating budgets throughout the costs management process.

Key responsibilities

• Review cases proactively to develop costs strategy and settlement parameters.
• Draft Precedent H and prepare Precedent R on opponent’s Precedent H.
• Prepare points of dispute, consider replies, and negotiate settlements.
• Update client reports, handle correspondence within SLA, and conduct periodic file reviews.
• Instruct counsel for detailed assessment hearings and mediations.
• Delegate tasks to a paralegal and support their technical development.
• Ensure compliance with SRA standards and meet performance targets.

Required profile

• Minimum 2 years’ experience as a costs budgeter or negotiator handling an own caseload.
• Degree and/or LPC and/or ALCD qualification.
• Proven client liaison experience, both verbal and written.
• Hands‑on experience with the Detailed Assessment process, including Precedent H, Precedent R, budgets and points of dispute.

Required skills

• Strong telephone negotiation ability.
• Understanding of current cost case law and insurance litigation practice.
