Costs Draftsperson – National Costs Department

About the role

We are expanding our National Costs Department at Thompsons Solicitors and are looking for a skilled Costs Draftsperson to manage a diverse, high‑value caseload. The role covers personal injury multi‑track matters, asbestos, clinical negligence and other public‑interest cases, from budgeting through to negotiating and finalising bills of costs.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare Cost Budgets (Precedent H) and Statements of Costs for Summary Assessment (N260s).
• Draft Estimates and Formal Bills of Costs for detailed assessment hearings.
• Negotiate cost budgets and bills, aiming for optimal settlement terms.
• Attend Costs CMCs, detailed assessment and application hearings.
• Collaborate closely with PI lawyers, junior and leading counsel on complex cost matters.
• Provide day‑to‑day coaching and technical guidance as a “Supervision Buddy” to colleagues.

Required profile

• Experienced and confident costs professional with strong organisational abilities.
• Excellent written and verbal communication, persuasive advocacy and negotiation skills.
• High attention to detail and ability to manage a full caseload independently.
• Comfortable working within a national structure and flexible working policies.

Required skills

• Proficiency with standard IT packages such as Outlook and Word.
