Crane Engineer

About the role

Barrett Steel is looking for an experienced Electric Overhead Crane Engineer to join its Asset Care Crane Division in Northern England. The role will primarily support the Scunthorpe site and other group locations, with occasional travel to additional Barrett Steel sites across the UK.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on electric overhead travelling cranes and related equipment.
• Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults, perform effective repairs and achieve high first‑time fix rates.
• Conduct root‑cause analysis after equipment failures to prevent recurrence.
• Maintain crane availability and reliability through proactive maintenance strategies.
• Prepare and complete Risk Assessments, Method Statements and Point of Work Risk Assessments.
• Collect and report crane performance data to management on a monthly basis.
• Provide technical guidance on crane operation, maintenance and lifting activities.

Required profile

• Motivated, safety‑conscious engineer with a strong technical background.
• Qualified in an appropriate electrical and/or mechanical discipline.
• Proactive approach to maintenance and problem‑solving.

Required skills

• Strong electrical knowledge of electric overhead travelling cranes (EOTCs).
• Experience with Konecranes, ABUS and Demag crane systems.
• Ability to diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical faults.
• Competence in preventative maintenance, root‑cause analysis and risk assessments.
