Customs Brokerage Clerk – Import/Export

About the role

Freightserve is seeking an experienced Customs Brokerage Clerk to manage import and export customs declarations for a busy freight forwarding operation in Slough. The role involves ensuring compliance with UK customs legislation, trade agreements and duty rules while supporting customers and internal teams.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and submit import and export customs declarations using CDS.
• Maintain and verify customs documentation such as commercial invoices, packing lists, certificates of origin and preference certificates.
• Liaise with HMRC, customers, shipping partners and internal departments to resolve customs queries and clearance issues.
• Monitor customs delays, document discrepancies and support audit and compliance reporting.
• Advise on tariff classification, customs valuation, Incoterms and duty relief schemes (e.g., IPR/OPR, RGR).
• Stay up‑to‑date with UK customs policies, CDS transition and post‑Brexit trade rules.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years’ experience in customs clearance or international trade compliance.
• Strong knowledge of UK customs rules, HMRC requirements and trade systems.
• Professional qualification such as BIFA or IOE&IT is desirable but not essential.
• Excellent communication, problem‑solving abilities and the capacity to work accurately under pressure.

Required skills

• Proficiency with the Customs Declaration Service (CDS) system.
• Experience using the Sequoia customs software.
