Customs Clerk – Import Clearance Specialist

About the role

We are seeking an experienced Customs Clerk to join a well‑established international freight forwarding business in Ashford. The role focuses initially on road import customs clearances with full training provided for air and sea freight operations, offering a clear path towards a Multimodal Import Operator position.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and submit accurate road import customs declarations using the relevant customs systems.
• Ensure all entries comply with HMRC regulations and current customs legislation.
• Review commercial invoices, packing lists, CMRs and other supporting documents for compliance.
• Liaise with customers, hauliers, customs authorities and internal teams to resolve queries.
• Monitor customs entries through to clearance, keeping shipments on schedule.
• Maintain precise customs records and complete required documentation.
• Provide customers with timely updates on shipment and clearance status.
• Support the wider import operations team while receiving cross‑modal training.

Required profile

• Previous experience completing customs declarations, preferably road freight clearances.
• Good understanding of HMRC customs procedures and import documentation.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to work accurately under pressure.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ambitious individual seeking progression to a Multimodal Import Operator role.

Required skills

• Proficiency with customs or freight forwarding IT systems.
