Deputy Director – Portfolio Management (Growth, Science & International)

About the role

The UK Space Agency is seeking a Deputy Director to lead its Portfolio Management function across growth, science and international programmes. This senior position will shape the agency’s strategic portfolio, ensuring value for money, alignment with the National Space Strategy and strong partnerships with ESA and other government bodies.

Key responsibilities

• Provide visible, inclusive leadership that motivates and empowers cross‑functional teams.
• Develop and maintain governance frameworks, financial planning and analytical insight for all UKSA programmes and ESA commitments.
• Create a coherent, evidence‑driven portfolio view that supports strategic decision‑making.
• Oversee enabling services such as governance, financial analysis, operational support and analytical capability.
• Collaborate with DSIT, HMT, ESA and wider government to ensure portfolio affordability and optimisation.
• Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.

Required profile

• Proven senior leadership experience in portfolio or programme management within a public‑sector or aerospace environment.
• Strong understanding of financial planning, governance and analytical processes.
• Ability to work across multiple government departments and international agencies.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
