Design Engineer – Powertrain Systems

About the role
We are looking for a Design Engineer to create innovative powertrain components and systems that meet client specifications, cost and quality targets. The role involves working on internal projects as well as customer‑driven developments within our Shenley Wood facility.
Key responsibilities
- Communicate regularly with the Lead Designer and report to the Chief Engineer on technical progress.
- Design components, systems and products using CAD tools, ensuring they meet specifications and can be manufactured.
- Perform first‑principles analysis and hand calculations to validate designs.
- Specify, run and interpret simulations, and incorporate results into improved solutions.
- Prepare manufacturing‑ready models, drawings and change orders that comply with Helix design standards.
- Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering, Procurement, Quality and suppliers to ensure design for manufacture and quality compliance.
- Investigate mechanical failures, propose counter‑measures and document all actions.
- Support DFMEA creation, design reviews and the development of design procedures and tools.
- Produce technical reports and present findings to internal stakeholders.
- Identify opportunities to reduce complexity, cost and waste.
Required profile
- Strong communication skills for interaction with Lead Designer, Chief Engineer and cross‑functional teams.
- Ability to present technical information in meetings and design reviews.
- Proficiency in applying first‑principles engineering and hand calculations.
- Experience collaborating with manufacturing, procurement and quality functions.
- Capability to investigate failures and develop documented corrective actions.

- CAD design tools (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA)
- Simulation software for mechanical analysis
- DFMEA methodology
- Hand calculation and analytical validation techniques
