Digitiser – Fixed‑Term Position in Natural History Collections

About the role
We are seeking two enthusiastic Digitisers on a fixed‑term basis to support the Cambridge University Herbarium and the University Museum of Zoology. Working within the Central England Digitisation Co‑Hub, you will help digitise over 1.1 million natural‑history specimens for the national DiSSCo UK programme.
Key responsibilities
- Prepare and safely handle delicate plant and insect specimens.
- Capture high‑quality images and transcribe label data using photography, georeferencing and databasing.
- Optimise images with imaging software and follow established imaging protocols.
- Apply biodiversity data standards (Darwin Core, GBIF) and enter data into a collections management system such as KE EMu.
- Suggest workflow improvements and contribute operational data for project reporting.
- Collaborate with peers across the Central England network, provide training and deliver behind‑the‑scenes tours for visitors.
Required profile
- Education to A‑level, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent practical experience.
- Hands‑on experience in collections management and use of a relational database (e.g., KE EMu).
- Excellent manual dexterity, attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy in repetitive tasks.
- Working knowledge of biodiversity data standards such as Darwin Core and GBIF.
- Applied knowledge of botany or entomology and experience of digitisation or conservation projects is an advantage.
