Duty Team Manager – Child Protection

About the role

The Duty Team Manager will lead a dedicated duty team within St. Helens MBC’s Child Protection service. You will oversee a group of six social workers, a social work assistant and an assistant team manager, ensuring timely assessment allocation and high‑quality practice.

Key responsibilities

• Allocate and monitor all child and family assessments received through the front‑door referral system.
• Manage the transition of cases at key points such as ICPC, PLO, or the initiation of care proceedings.
• Supervise and support the duty team, including performance management and wellbeing initiatives.
• Oversee Section 47 investigations and multi‑agency collaboration.
• Ensure risk management and care planning meet statutory standards.

Required profile

• Proven experience managing social work teams, preferably within duty or crisis services.
• Strong understanding of Section 47 investigations and child protection legislation.
• Ability to supervise staff, manage performance and promote staff wellbeing.
• Experience working in multi‑agency environments and handling complex case transfers.

Required skills

• Knowledge of child protection assessment processes.
• Familiarity with risk assessment and care planning frameworks.
• Competence in managing Section 47 investigations.
