Embedded Software Engineer

About the role

Archangel Lightworks Ltd is seeking an experienced Embedded Software Engineer to join its fast‑paced start‑up team. You will design, develop and integrate embedded software for high‑performance communication and control systems that support space‑enabled networks.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and test embedded software across multiple subsystems.
• Support test automation, system integration and deployment for optical ground stations.
• Provide specialist expertise in Linux, FPGA, IoT, image processing and related areas.
• Continuously improve software processes, including automated testing.
• Take full ownership of designs from concept through to ground‑station integration.

Required profile

• Minimum 4 years of commercial experience in real‑time/embedded software development post‑graduation.
• Proven ability to work with RTOS (e.g., FreeRTOS) and Linux environments.
• Experience with networking (Ethernet, IP), DMA and hardware interfaces such as I2C, SPI, CAN and EtherCAT.
• Strong knowledge of Git version control and CI pipelines.
• Ability to develop test scripts in Python.

• Xilinx FPGA/MPSoC toolchain (Vivado, Vitis) – desirable.
• Satcom and optical free‑space communication standards (CCSDS, ECSS, SDA) – desirable.
• High‑speed (1 Gbps+) communication protocols, FEC, clock recovery – desirable.
• IoT/cloud integration protocols such as MQTT – desirable.
• VHDL/Verilog, Yocto Linux, Petalinux, Buildroot – desirable.
• Rust, Matlab/Simulink, Embedded Coder, HDL code generation – desirable.
