Engineering Manager (Capital Projects)

About the role

The Capital Projects Engineering Manager leads the engineering team responsible for delivering capital projects at GSK’s Barnard Castle manufacturing site. Reporting to the Site’s Capital & Operational Engineering Director, the role owns the site capital plan and ensures projects are prioritised, governed and delivered safely, compliantly and on schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Lead a team of 4‑8 direct reports and up to 12 permanent staff plus contractors to deliver capital projects aligned with business needs.
• Own the end‑to‑end delivery of the capital project portfolio, meeting scope, quality, cost, schedule, safety and compliance standards.
• Manage a capital expenditure budget of approximately £25 million‑£50 million per year, ensuring financial control and value delivery.
• Ensure robust governance through PMF, QMS, change control, validation, commissioning and qualification processes.
• Oversee external partners, consultants, contractors and suppliers, ensuring compliance with GMP, EHS, CDM and permit‑to‑work requirements.
• Maintain oversight of portfolio risks, constraints, inter‑dependencies and escalation points.
• Build strong relationships with site stakeholders, business owners and cross‑divisional teams.

Required profile

• Proven engineering leadership experience in capital project delivery within a highly regulated manufacturing environment, preferably pharmaceutical.
• Strong technical judgement and ability to manage large‑scale budgets and complex project interfaces.
• Demonstrated capability in coaching, developing and motivating engineering teams.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder‑management skills.
