English Teacher - Second in Department

About the role

We are looking for an ambitious English educator to join a supportive secondary school in the Smethwick/Birmingham area. The role combines classroom teaching with departmental leadership, offering a clear pathway to senior responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and deliver engaging English lessons for Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 learners.
• Assess student progress, maintain accurate records and provide constructive feedback.
• Support the Head of English in strategic planning, curriculum development and resource management.
• Lead specific initiatives such as literacy intervention, KS3 coordination or exam preparation.
• Mentor and coach colleagues, share best practices and foster a collaborative learning environment.
• Deputise for the Head of Department, chair meetings and oversee departmental resources when required.

Required profile

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
• Proven success delivering English education at KS3 and KS4.
• Readiness to take on leadership duties and mentor staff.
• Enhanced DBS clearance (or willingness to obtain).
• Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal abilities.
