Environmental, Health and Safety Lead

About the role

This role leads the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) function at a manufacturing site in Houghton Le Spring. You will drive sustainability initiatives, ensure regulatory compliance and embed a strong EHS culture across the organisation.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement short‑term and long‑term EHS strategies for the site.
• Act as the technical expert on site process technologies and EHS requirements.
• Conduct inspections, audits, SMATs and cold‑eye reviews to monitor programme execution.
• Coach and mentor line management on EHS matters and support regulatory navigation.
• Design, schedule and deliver interactive EHS training for staff and contractors.
• Lead incident investigations, track corrective actions and analyse trend data.
• Manage the site environmental permit and water discharge consent, and oversee waste‑management programmes.
• Prepare and submit internal, corporate and statutory compliance reports.
• Maintain ISO 14001 certification and coordinate internal audit processes.
• Ensure compliance with permits and plans such as SPCC, SWPPP and air emissions.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading EHS programmes in a manufacturing environment.
• Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and ISO 14001 standards.
• Ability to influence and mentor across all levels of the organisation.
• Excellent analytical, communication and problem‑solving skills.
• Self‑motivated with a proactive approach to continuous improvement.
